122nd MPAD Deploys to Iraq

Welcome to the deployment journal for the 122nd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment (MPAD) which deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) I & II from January 2004 through February 2005. The 122nd MPAD, of the Washington State Army National Guard, had previously deployed to Bosnia (1997) and Kosovo (1999) in support of U.S. operations in those theaters. One of the Army’s premier public affairs units, the 122nd supported both the 1st Armored Division (OIF I) as well as the 1st Cavalry Division (OIF II) during its year-long deployment. When the unit was mobilized on January 3, 2004, its soldiers left behind families, careers and educational pursuits to serve America in the front lines of the War on Terrorism. The soldiers of the 122nd were proud to answer their nation’s call!

This journal provides an all too brief record of some of the soldiers, missions and daily routine during the unit’s time in Baghdad, Iraq. From combat operations in the greater Baghdad area to Najif and Fallujah, there were often soldiers from the 122nd MPAD there to support the mission and chronicle events for the world in print, video and through DVIDS satellite technology. The unit’s members were a mix of young soldiers experiencing their first deployment and seasoned veterans like SSG Fred Newcomer (Bosnia 1997; Kosovo 1999) as well as First Sergeant William Kuhns (Viet Nam; Bosnia 1997; Kosovo 1999). The unit also boasted the U.S. Army’s Journalist of the Year for 2003, CPL Bill Putnam.

Through times of danger, as well as tedium, the members of the 122nd MPAD soldiered on while making a measurable contribution to the war effort. This site is dedicated them.
